Storyboarding is a metaphor that takes both text and imagery into account to establish chains of concepts representing events or sub-events. The project is primarily concerned to build foundational concepts to aid situational awareness through development of analytic storyboarding algorithms. A central thesis of the storyboarding effort is that successful explanations of many social, economic, political, and disaster situations require building models of connected activities over time and geographical locations that combine sub-events to reliably capture key indicators of a situation. By seamlessly integrating inferences across diverse open source data streams, the storyboarding research helps automate the generation of explanations, so that an analyst can focus on interpreting the discoveries rather than on the mechanics of integrating information.
